Every month we honor one athlete to recognize as Athlete of the Month. This athlete is someone that our team selects that demonstrates dedication and commitment to our community and program, and holds to our values of doing things with integrity and humility, being inclusive, and hard-working. Our selected member as our 2024 October Athlete of the Month is...

FREDDY RODRIGUEZ!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?

I've been doing CrossFit for about four months.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO COME TO CROSSFIT? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

What really motivates me to come to CrossFit is the incredible sense of community. The support and camaraderie among everyone make the tough workouts feel more manageable and even fun. I like how we all encourage each other, whether we’re lifting weights or pushing through a tough WOD.

My goals in doing CrossFit are to support our community in every way I can. I recently had the opportunity to be a judge at the C4K competition, and I loved the intensity and passion of the athletes, as well as the support from their relatives and fans. It was a fantastic first experience, and I'm hoping to immerse myself in more events like this in the future! On the physical side, I want to learn and nail down some movements like bar muscle-ups, double unders, handstand walks, and pistol squats. I’m hoping to get at least one of these down by the end of the year!

WHAT DOES CROSSFIT MEAN TO YOU?

For me CrossFit it’s not just a workout; it’s a community where I feel supported and challenged. The variety of WOD keeps things exciting and helps me push my limits, both physically and mentally. I appreciate the camaraderie that comes from sharing tough workouts with others and celebrating our progress together.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TYPES OF WORKOUTS IN CROSSFIT?

Right now, my favorite movements in CrossFit are snatches and clean and jerks. I love the complexity and attention to detail required to master these techniques. They demand a lot of practice and patience, so each small improvement feels incredibly rewarding. I appreciate the suggestions and feedback from our coaches while I'm working on these lifts.  I know I have a long journey ahead to truly master these movements, but seeing the progress I’ve made so far keeps me motivated!

COACH JUST GAVE YOU THE CONTROL FOR SPOTIFY – WHAT'S YOUR WORKOUT SONG OF CHOICE?

My workout song of choice would definitely be something high-energy like “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. It’s such a classic pump-up song that really gets you fired up for a tough workout!

IF YOU COULD WRITE ANY WORKOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? FORMAT, REPS, LOAD, ETC.?

If I could design a CrossFit workout, it would be a mix of strength and conditioning. Here’s what I’d create:

21-15-9 For Time:

Thrusters 95/65

Pull-Ups

Kettlebell Swings 53/35

Cash-Out:

500m Row or Bike

HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?

I’d say CrossFit has significantly influenced my life beyond the gym. The discipline and focus I’ve developed during workouts have helped me tackle challenges in other areas, making me more resilient and goal-oriented. I’ve found that I approach problems with a stronger mindset.

The community aspect of CrossFit has greatly enriched my social life. I truly enjoy meeting new people and building connections, and CrossFit has provided the perfect opportunity for that.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JOINING CROSSFIT KAKOU?

I know it can be intimidating to step into a CrossFit gym and see athletes doing complex movements. I’ve been there too! But don’t let those feelings hold you back from getting started. You’ll feel so much better after your first workout, and the support you receive from the coaches and fellow members will keep you motivated to come back.

Once you get going, my top advice would be not to rush the process. Focus on learning the movements and techniques correctly; it’s all about building a solid foundation. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek feedback from the coaches—they're there to help you succeed!

Also, remember to pace yourself and listen to your body. It’s easy to get caught up in the intensity, but taking care of yourself is crucial for long-term progress (I’ve learned this the hard way). Finally, get to know your fellow members; the community is incredibly supportive and can make your experience much more enjoyable. Enjoy the ride, and celebrate your progress, no matter how small!
