Our selected member as our 2024 February Athlete of the Month is...

COURTNEY WATSON!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?

I just had my 11 year anniversary last year. I started on a Groupon and haven't looked back.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO COME TO CROSSFIT? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

If you'd asked me when I first started, I would say something more like "get my first muscle up" or "learn to handstand walk". As I've gotten older with CrossFit, my goals are less tangible and have shifted to just wanting to be fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

WHAT DOES CROSSFIT MEAN TO YOU?

Not to sound corny, but "community" will always come to mind when thinking of what defines CrossFit for me. I had taken some time to workout at home and do my own thing for a bit, and the #1 thing I missed were the people. The people who hold you accountable to show up and put in the work, the ones who push you to work harder, and the ones who are there to cheer you on, are what make CrossFit so unique.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENTS IN CROSSFIT?

Heavy power cleans would be #1 but I'm happy with any type of heavy barbell.

COACH JUST GAVE YOU THE CONTROL FOR SPOTIFY – WHAT'S YOUR WORKOUT SONG OF CHOICE?

"Legend" - The Score

IF YOU COULD WRITE ANY WORKOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? FORMAT, REPS, LOAD, ETC.?

It's not my own workout but my favorite CrossFit workout that I never get tired of is DT:

5 Rounds For Time:

12 Deadlift 155/105

9 Hang Power Clean 155/105

6 Push Jerk 155/105

HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?

Confidence would be the number one positive affect from CrossFit. I was an athlete all through high school and I remember feeling a little lost when I went to college and didn't have that physical outlet that I had had all my life. When I started CrossFit I was able to gain that confidence back and have really maintained that positive feeling over all these years. Secondly, the people I've met and relationships I have made in CrossFit has been another positive that I can't deny. Lots of great friendships have come through the "mutual suffering".

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JOINING CROSSFIT KAKOU?

NO 1: Just show up.

NO. 2: Master the fundamentals. It's so easy to want to jump ahead to more complex movements like kipping pull ups etc. but building up those good habits and strengths first will make you 10x better (and you wont have to spend years trying to correct bad movements like I have :-) ).
