CALEB HUGHES!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT?
8 Years last month… so any day now I should be able to walk up a flight of stairs at work and not need to catch my breath. When I think about it, our CrossFit gym has been one of the longest associations I’ve had with anything in my life. Longer than any home I’ve lived in, job I’ve had, school I’ve gone to... It’s pretty remarkable.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO COME TO CROSSFIT? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
“Move my body every day and feel thankful” is what I can reduce my goal down to. I haven’t been attached to many more specific strength or fitness goals than that for the last few years. I go to 6am class every day because that routine is helpful, and that place and those people have become an important touch point for me in my day.
WHAT DOES CROSSFIT MEAN TO YOU?
Routine, structure, community… an investment in your future self, your health, and your body. It is also one of the few times we spend with others and people are not reaching for or looking at their phones. I like that people are all present together in the same space doing the same thing at the same time. Moments and activities like that are rarer to come by then you’d realize.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENTS IN CROSSFIT?
Burpees and Double Unders I enjoy. Bike > Row. Least favorite are most movements on the rig and there is no love loss with large sets of wallballs for me.
COACH JUST GAVE YOU THE CONTROL FOR SPOTIFY – WHAT'S YOUR WORKOUT SONG OF CHOICE?
It really depends on the workout. I like a good country music playlist for longer cardio workouts. Lots of my favorited songs in my gym playlist have an EDM vibe or hip hop. There are songs that are better for the rhythm of doing Double Unders… I don’t know what songs they are but you know them when you hear them. I don’t work out in silence or without music. I call it “Prison Style” when coaches have the music down or off. I keep a Bluetooth speaker in my gym bag just in case something goes wrong with the sound system. An 800m run is the farthest Ill go without my headphones.
IF YOU COULD WRITE ANY WORKOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? FORMAT, REPS, LOAD, ETC.?
I almost will always prefer a Partner Workout or EMOM style WOD. I’m all about that planned rest baby! But something like:
2:30 On/2:30 Off for 6 rounds (30 Minutes Total; 3 rounds each of A and B) Can be Partner You-Go-I-Go
Part A: 15/13 Cal Row
8 Burpees Over the bar
AMRAP Squat Clean Thrusters 115/75
Part B: 12/10 Cal Bike
50 Double Unders
AMRAP Devils Press 50/35
Score: Total Squat Clean Thrusters and Devils Press
HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
I’m much more able to give myself to others in my job after having spent time in the gym. I think CrossFit being the more physically demanding part of my day allows me to do other basic activities with ease. I also have an entire network of people I’m excited to see and spend time with. I think it has given me a collection of good natured, likeminded people in my circle. It has given me gratitude. I talk with people every day who either cannot move their body, have pain, or other medical or mental health issues and it’s a reminder that what my body can do is a blessing and never guaranteed. There are people out there who have very little in terms of community or friendship and support and I feel blessed to have that as well.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JOINING CROSSFIT KAKOU?
My advice would be scale everything you may need to but come consistently as you can. Don’t not come to a class because you think there is a movement you are not strong enough for or can’t do skill wise. Adjust or scale it. Most importantly, be consistent. Its most enjoyable if you are coming regularly and CrossFit programing as a whole makes more sense if you are doing it consistently.
